I greet you once again in the Name of Jesus!
I want to share further on the furor that presently surrounds the date December 21, 2012. There are literally hundreds of web sites, chat rooms, blogs, and books being written on this topic. Fear and unrest have gripped the hearts of many people as they look with fear and uncertainty at a future many say could hold drastic climatic changes, social upheaval, and perhaps even the end of civilization as we know it. History Channel specials, as well as a new movie entitled 2012 that is coming out next month have added to the hoopla and hysteria surrounding this date.
Many Christians have even gotten aboard the 2012 craze. What will happen at approximately 11:11 PM Universal Time on December 21, 2012 when the earth and sun will align directly in front of the heart of the Milky Way? No one knows for sure. What is a Biblically based response to all of this? I want to share on that in an up-coming edition of THE WEEKLY WORD. For now, I want to continue talking about what we left off with last time. I refer to the subject of prophetic time. Not understanding the mystery of prophetic time has caused much misunderstanding in the Body of Christ concerning prophetic events.
First, we need to understand time as God sees it. As humans we see time as chronological or linear in nature. In other words, time is understood as passing in a straight line from start to finish. Linear time is understood to have a beginning, and at some point an end. God does not live in linear time, and ultimately does not carry out His plans and purposes for us and the nations of the world in linear time. God carries out His plans according to prophetic time. Prophetic time is cyclical in nature. It is seen in phases, patterns, and cycles. I want to illustrate this concept with several examples from both God’s Word as well as history. The concept of cyclical time is seen in Ecclesiastes 1:9. Here the Bible says,
What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun. [Eccl. 1:9 ESV also see Eccl. 3:15]
In other words, events that have occurred in the past will be seen as a pattern that will occur at some point again in the future. In the Bible we see 40 year, 50 year, 100 year, and 400 hundred year cycles occurring. A powerful example of this can be seen in the 100 year cycle that occurred with U.S. Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy.
The Lincoln/Kennedy Connection
Lincoln was elected in 1860 – Kennedy was elected in 1960
Lincoln had seven letters in his last name – Kennedy had seven letters in his last name
Lincoln was slain on a Friday – Kennedy was slain on Friday
Lincoln was killed with his wife present – Kennedy was killed with his wife present
Civil rights was a central issue of Lincoln’s Presidency – Civil rights was a central figure of Kennedy’s Presidency
Lincoln’s election was contested – Kennedy’s election was contested
Lincoln’s secretary was named Kennedy – Kennedy’s secretary was named Lincoln
Lincoln was warned not to go to the theater – Kennedy was warned not to go to Dallas
Lincoln’s successor (VP) was named Johnson – Kennedy’s successor (VP) was named Johnson
Andrew Johnson was born in 1808 – Lyndon B. Johnson was born in 1908
Andrew Johnson was a Southern Democrat – Lyndon Johnson was a Southern Democrat
Lincoln was shot in a theater, the killer hid in a warehouse – Kennedy was shot from a warehouse, the killer hid in a theater
Lincoln’s assassin was killed before going to trial – Kennedy’s assassin was killed before going to trial.
Do you think this was mere coincidence? I personally don’t think so. I submit to you that this is an example of a 100 year cycle playing out. It is Ecclesiastes 1:9 and 3:15 being played out in the events of history. When it comes to prophetic time, we learn that the future is hidden in the past. Think about the beginning. In Genesis 1 & 2 we see there is no sin, no pain, and no sorrow .Compare this with the last two chapters of the Bible, Revelation 21 & 22 and you will find that things are exactly as they were in the beginning of human history, even the Tree of Life will be present! That which has been is that which shall be.
There are many Old Testament pictures of future prophetic events. For example, the catching away of the Church or the rapture is pictured in Exodus 19. The Bible teaches the rapture will be preceded by a loud voice and the sound of a trumpet. [See 1 Thess. 4:16 – 17; 1 Cor. 15:52; Rev. 4:1] The same pattern is seen in Exodus 19.
Exodus 19 account – The Rapture
God came down on the 3rd day The third day [Hos. 6:1 – 3]
God came down in the clouds Coming in the clouds [Acts 1:9 – 11]
Noise of trumpets Trump of God will sound
God came in fire Comes in fire [2 Thess. 1:7, 8]
God answered with a voice a shout and voice of the Archangel
God calls Moses up Believers caught up
The pattern of the future was hidden in the past. This can be seen many other places in scripture as well. For example as we look at the seven feasts of the Lord, God’s moeidim; His appointed times, we can see the pattern of future events hidden in the past.
We will look at the seven feasts and their prophetic fulfillments next time.
The Weekly Word is found in Leviticus 23:1, 2. Here the Bible says,
1The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, These are the appointed feasts of the LORD that you shall proclaim as holy convocations; they are my appointed feasts. [Lev. 23:1, 2 ESV]
Until next time, this is THE WEEKLY WORD
