I greet you once again in the Name of Jesus!

First, I want to apologize for the lateness of this post this week. I have had several things rolling around in my heart and I needed to meditate on them for a while. We live in very exciting times where Bible prophecy is being fulfilled like never before. I believe more all the time that ours is the generation that will see Jesus return in the clouds to receive us unto Him.

I want to re-visit 2 Thessalonians 2 this week. We have looked at this passage in some detail of late, but I want to center up in this edition of THE WEEKLY WORD on verses 6 and 7.  The Bible says in the KJV, 6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. [2 Thess. 2:6, 7 KJV]

The phrase from Verse 7, “the mystery of iniquity” has really been rolling around in my spirit this week. The NKJV and most modern translations, render this, “The mystery of lawlessness.” What is this “mystery?” I believe a brief word study would be in order at this point.

First, “mystery” is from the Greek musterion, denoting in its root form a person initiated in sacred mysteries. It is referred to as a locking up or that which serves for locking up. Interestingly, in classical Greek this word was usually found in the plural, ta musteria, the mysteries, as denoting secret politico-religious doctrines, especially of the Eleusinian Mysteries wherein some secret information communicated to the initiated was in turn to be kept secret. It denotes in general something hidden or not fully manifest. You could simply call this a secret.

This “mystery of lawlessness” began to work in secret thousands of years ago really and in Paul’s day had not been fully revealed or manifested. This mystery or secret cannot be revealed, it cannot have the veil removed, or the mask pulled off except by the revelation of the Holy Spirit. In these last of the Last Days the Spirit is opening the Word like never before I believe in the history of the Church. Why is this? I believe it is because we have entered the corridor, if you will, of the time of the end. The Bible says in Daniel 12:4,

4 But you, O Daniel, shut up the words and seal the Book until the time of the end. [Then] many shall run to and fro and search anxiously [through the Book], and knowledge [of God’s purposes as revealed by His prophets] shall be increased and become great. [Daniel 12:4 THE AMPLIFIED BIBLE] The Spirit is opening the words of the prophets to our understanding so that we can discern the times in which we live. What about the word, “iniquity” or “lawlessness?”

This word translated “iniquity” or “lawlessness” is from the Greek Anomia, and is transgression of the law. It is to be lawless, not having, knowing, or acknowledging the law. This is very interesting and it gives us a key to understanding the workings of this “secret.” The Bible says in regard to sin, 4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. [1 John 3:4 KJV] Since sin is the transgression of the law, then we could say that this “mystery” or “secret” has been working in the earth realm since sin entered back in the garden at the transgression of Adam.

I want to examine one more, I believe, salient word in this passage before moving on. The word, “work”, here is the Greek energeo and means simply to be active or be acting.

So, we could say that this secret of lawlessness, a determined refusal to not have, know, or acknowledge the law, specifically the law of God; was definitely working or operating in Paul’s day, and really has been for thousands of years. It has been working clandestinely up until these last of the Last Days, and now knowledge is increasing as the Spirit of God is pulling the cover off of this so that we can see it clearly. This “secret” is Satan’s evil agenda to take over the earth ultimately through his man, the antichrist.

This has not been an easy process. In this mystery’s working great effort has been made to supplant, subvert, and substitute the plans and purposes of God for the earth, and the crowning glory of His creation; man. How has the enemy done this? While there are and have been several channels down through the centuries the devil has used, he has primarily operated his wicked scheme through the three institutions God has established in the earth, namely; the family, human government, and the Church.

I want to share some things with you next time, which will I believe make this very clear to your understanding.

Today’s Word is found in Matthew 16:3. Here the Bible says,

3 And in the morning you say, ‘Today it will be stormy. The sky is red and cloudy.’ You know the meaning of what you see in the sky. But you can’t understand the signs of what is happening right now. [Matt. 16:3 NIV The Reader’s Edition]

Until next time, this is THE WEEKLY WORD.
